(You probably know this. There’s a subject you want to write about, only to then discover that someone else already wrote about it much better than you could)
I’m going to keep this short: There’s nothing wrong with trying (and sticking to) something new or unknown. But stop using a language because other people are starting to use it too? Seriously? If you need a programming language to be edgy and on the fringe for you to use it, then you should reexamine your priorities. Because it’s quite clearly more important to you to be “cool” and “hip” than to get stuff done.
I started to use Ruby because it’s an elegant language that allowed me to solve my problems quickly and succinctly. The last part is what’s important, being elegant is just the cherry on top (a very good-tasting cherry, mind you). And that’s not going to change just because there are now more people that use Ruby.
For the rest: what she said.
Yehuda also makes some good points.
If you’re not happy with Ruby, then either do something about it, or go somewhere else.
